Victorian 2010 Australian Innovation Festival Launch

Minister for Innovation, Environment and Climate Change Gavin Jennings and Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne Susan Riley joined Australian Innovation’s Peter Westfield and Elizabeth Rudd at the Melbourne Town Hall to launch Australia’s largest festival and announce some exciting new initiatives.

Currently in its 9th year, and running with the theme of ‘Sustainable Business’, the Australian Innovation festival has seen over 650 events run nationally, and catered to over 400,000 patrons.

The festivals ran with the theme of ‘creativity, connections, collaboration and commercialization’ and the hosted a broad range of events including: networking and business functions, technology showcases, open days, expos, product launches and fashion parades- all aimed at fostering Australia’s innovative spirit and creative talents.

Over 200 innovation leaders attended the launch in Victoria, which has hosted over 120 events throughout the Festival.

Minister for Climate change, Gavin Jennings commended Melbourne on its engagement and enthusiasm as a community and the Melbournian’s predilections for being involved and progressive thought.

Deputy Lord Mayor, Susan Riley, lauded Melbourne’s passion for creativity, arts and culture.

Mrs. Riley also suggested that the future success of innovation in Australia will be driven by the commercialization of Intellectual Property.

Some exciting innovation initiatives were also announced: The BIG awards and the BigXchange social networking website.

The Business Innovation and Growth awards will recognise achievements in creativity, assessment of market, funding models, execution, intellect and creativity across all industry sectors. Details of these awards to be announced in early July.

The BigXchange, launching later this month, will be a new social networking site aimed at nurturing relationships between INNOVATORS and ENTREPRENEURS. It is hoped that the website will facilitate fruitful relationships in the Innovation sector and help drive Australia’s economic growth and development.
